Abundance by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson

Abundance by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson is a fascinating book that seeks to answer a similar question that I raise in The Future Poor. That question is, “What keeps us from living in abundance given all the resources available to us in the US?”

They argue that the liberalism that was meant to create solutions has actually prevented much of the potential for progress especially for the middle and working class in America.

Aside from being brilliantly written, this book is an examination history and a questioning of where we have come in regards to the basics needed. These are things like affordable housing. Clean energy. They even take time to explore California’s high speed rail project - which is basically non existence after all this time.

What gets in the way of progress?

What things ought we focus on more?

What solutions are people already trying to provide?

These are some of the parallel questions that they explore which are near to the work I have been focusing on about retirement.

While it is a longer book, it is not daunting given the story telling ability of Klein and Thompson.
